Optimal buffered compression and coding mode selection for MPEG-4 shape coding

چکیده
We propose an optimal buffered compression algorithm for shape coding as defined in the forthcoming MPEG-4 international standard. The MPEG-4 shape coding scheme consists of two steps: first, distortion is introduced by down and up scaling; then, context-based arithmetic encoding is applied. Since arithmetic coding is "lossless," the down up scaling step is considered as a virtual quantizer. We first formulate the buffer-constrained adaptive quantization problem for shape coding, and then propose an algorithm for the optimal solution under buffer constraints. Previously, the fact that a conversion ratio (CR) of 1/4 makes a coded image irritating to human observers for QCIF size was reported for MPEG-4 shape coding. Therefore, careful consideration for small size images such as QCIF should be given to prevent coded images from being unacceptable. To this end, a low bit rate tuned algorithm is proposed in this paper as well. Experimental results are given using an MPEG-4 shape codec.

Optimal Shape Coding under Buffer Constraints
In this paper, we consider an optimal rate control algorithm for shape coding of emerging MPEG-4 compression system. Current MPEG-4 shape coding consists of two sub-steps; First distortion is introduced by scaling down and up way. Then, second, context-based arithmetic coding is applied. Since the arithmetic coding is \lossless", scaling down and up step is considered as a virtual quantizer. We...
متن کاملImproved MPEG-4 still texture image coding under noisy environment
This paper describes the performance of the MPEG-4 still texture image codec in coding noisy images. As will be shown, when using the MPEG-4 still texture image codec to compress a noisy image, increasing the compression rate does not necessarily imply reducing the peak-signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of the decoded image. An optimal operating point having the highest PSNR can be obtained within t...
متن کاملSprite Coding in Object-based Video Coding Standard: MPEG-4
This paper outlines a new standard video compression technology: MPEG-4. We propose a very efficient coding scheme using the one of compression tools of MPEG-4 “Sprite coding”. We first introduce MPEG-4 visual “Profiles”, which are sets of tools (technical elements) that realize certain types of applications. Among these “Profiles”, “Main Profile” is capable of using “Sprites” i.e. a unified ba...
متن کاملH.264/AVC Low Complexity Encoding: A Novel Fast Coding Mode Selection Solution
The ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) and the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) formed, in December 2001, the Joint Video Team (JVT) with the purpose to develop a new video coding standard that it is usually known as H.264/AVC, H.264 for ITU-T and Advanced Video Coding (AVC) for MPEG. The main objective was to achieve at least the double of the coding compression, for the same v...
متن کاملCoding of an arbitrarily shaped interlaced video in MPEG-4
The coding method in MPEG-4 for interlaced-video is introduced in this paper. Such a method is an extension of MPEG-2 interlaced coding tools to allow compression of arbitrarily-shaped interlaced-video. The new textureand-shape coding tools discussed here for arbitrarily-shaped interlaced-video provide good compression performance. It is demonstrated here that these interlaced tools improve the...
